Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has admitted he did not expect new goalkeeper Senne Lammens to settle in so quickly at Old Trafford. The 23-year-old Belgian has displayed remarkable confidence, despite this being his first experience with a club of Manchester United’s size.
“Of course, we do our diligence when we are going to buy players. It was a surprise. All the pressure that comes with the goalkeeper position, to arrive here and immediately show that confidence was impressive,” Amorim said. “To transmit that confidence to the team, I think, was a little bit of a surprise for me. I’m speaking as a manager, not everyone, but for me personally.”
Lammens Earns His Place
After United paid an initial £18m to sign Lammens on Deadline Day, he didn’t start his first three matches as Amorim opted to retain Altay Bayindir. However, since being selected in goal for the 2-0 win over Sunderland, Lammens has been consistently impressive.
Although one clean sheet in five games might not sound remarkable on paper, the Belgian has made numerous crucial saves, helping Manchester United maintain an unbeaten run during his appearances.

Contrast With Previous Goalkeepers
Past United keepers have struggled to deliver consistency. Andre Onana never maintained form and was loaned out to Trabzonspor, with no guaranteed return to the starting XI. Altay Bayindir, on the other hand, often struggled with crosses and corners, causing worry among fans.
Lammens’ confident displays so far indicate he could become a reliable long-term option for the Red Devils between the sticks.
Stats from Fotmob.com show that the Belgian’s decision-making and composure have helped stabilize the United backline, giving Amorim confidence to build his squad around a dependable goalkeeper.
