Xavi issues fresh update on Frenkie de Jong future amid Manchester United and Chelsea interest

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez failed to rule out the chances of losing Frenkie de Jong this summer, with Manchester United and Chelsea keen on the player.

Man United reportedly agreed a €85million transfer fee with Barca for De Jong in July but the midfielder has reportedly refused to move on due to his deferred wages worth around about €17m.

It was also reported by several outlets that the midfielder’s unwillingness to join Manchester United is because United cannot offer him Champions League football this summer at least.

As a result, Chelsea joined the transfer pursuit of the midfielder and are reportedly in the pole position to sign the 26-year-old, as they can match the midfielder’s Champions League football demands, thanks to finishing 3rd last season.

Frenkie de Jong came off as a substitute against Pumas UNAM on Sunday and put out a resounding performance, scoring late in the game to help Barcelona to a 6-0 thumping victory.

Xavi hails the midfielder as a ‘great player’ but fails to rule out any chance that would see the former Ajax midfielder leave Nou Camp this summer.

“I don’t know what will happen with Frenkie de Jong,” said Xavi. “Until August 31, anything is possible but he already knows what I think and what the club wants and needs. Of course I’m counting on him, he’s a great player.”

Barcelona president Laporta has also stated that Barca and De Jong want the same thing [want to stay put at Barca] but confirms that clubs are interested in his signature.

Frenkie’s our player and we want him to stay at Barcelona, he wants to stay too,” said Laporta via Reshad Rahman. “With him and his teammates, we have a very powerful midfield. He has offers, but we want him to stay”
