Wout Weghorst explains why he took Alex Telles’ no.27 jersey at Manchester United

Manchester United completed the signing of Wout Weghorst from Besiktas on loan and the striker has explained why he chose the no.27 jersey.

Weghorst joined Man United from Besiktas to complete the remainder of the 2022/2023 season on loan and he’s expected to be an understudy to Anthony Martial.

Following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November, Erik ten Hag thought of the need to sign a striker to replace the Portuguese forward and to ease the pressure on Martial.

Weghorst could now make his debut against Crystal Palace on Wednesday in the Premier League, having completed his signing last week.

On why he chose the no.27 jersey that was previously donned by Alex Telles, who joined Sevilla on a season-long loan deal, Weghorst told MU: “Of course, I looked into the ones that are free or available. Two and seven will make nine, of course – a striker’s number. I had a feeling with it.

“Of course, when I came here, I heard about it was Alex [Telles]’s number, he got loaned out now. I first had to ask him if that was okay, so I said that was, for me, important and then, in the end, there was no problem so thanks to him also.”

It’s unclear whether Weghorst will start against Crystal Palace or not but Erik ten Hag would obviously want to have Anthony Martial leading his front line against Arsenal this weekend in the Premier League.
