What Lisandro Martinez said after helping Argentina beat Honduras 3-0

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez played 90 minutes as Argentina beat Honduras 3-0 in an international friendly during the early hours of Saturday.

Martinez only moved to Man United from Ajax last transfer market but a lot of claims have been made about the defender.

Former Liverpool player Graeme Souness said after Martinez helped United beat Liverpool 2-1 in August that there is nothing special about the former Ajax defender and with time, he will be found out that he’s not a modern day defender.

Jamie Carragher also said Lisandro Martinez wouldn’t succeed as a centre-back in the Premier League due to his height.

Some said Martinez would turn out to be a flop at Manchester United, given the record United have with Argentine players.

The English media may have had their claims about the Argentina international but one thing is clear, Martinez has improved United’s backline, helping them go on a four-match winning run in the Premier League. He also started at the back against Sheriff Tiraspol and as expected, United won 2-0 with a clean sheet.

Speaking after the final whistle in the game between Argentina and Iran, he said: “The English press? I’m not even giving a ear to that.

“I trust in myself and I work on myself. I am happy to be in the best league in the world.”
