Former England forward Wayne Rooney believes Erik ten Hag is the right man to take Manchester United back to the top.
Man United appointed Ten Hag as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s permanent replacement at the end of last season.
The Dutchman is obviously doing well at Old Trafford as he has almost turned Manchester United into a proactive team.
The Red Devils are three points off the top-four with one game in hand after seven wins in 13 league games and booked their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Thursday when he guided Manchester United to a comfortable 4-2 win over Aston Villa at the Theatre of Dreams.
United are playing the way Ten Hag wants and Rooney believes the former Ajax manager is the right man to take his former club back to the top and confirms that the Dutch tactician has done well so far.
“He’s the right person for this job,” Rooney said. “I know Steve McClaren very well from Derby and I’m very close to Darren Fletcher so I know what he [Ten Hag] does and how he works. I know the players and the staff are much happier than they have been in recent years.
“I think Ten Hag has done a very good job. For the first time in two or three years I’m starting to see an identity at Manchester United which I haven’t seen in the last two or three years.”
Harry Maguire was included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup that will commence later this month.
Wayne Rooney said he wasn’t surprised by Southgate’s decision to include the Manchester United skipper and predicted that Maguire won’t let England down in Qatar.
“I’m not surprised [by Harry Maguire‘s selection],” Rooney added. “He has performed well in the last two competitions. Harry is a great professional. He will start and he won’t let England down.”
