A few number of Manchester United players have been eliminated from the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup after poor form in the group stage but one more player could join the short list on Friday.
With the 2022 World Cup approaching its first knockout stage, below are some of the countries that couldn’t go through to the next phase and sadly, some Man United players fell in that category.
Tunisia – Hannibal Mejbri
Manchester United starlet Mejbri has crashed out of the World Cup after Tunisia failed to go through to the next round despite a big 1-0 win over defending champions France on Wednesday evening.
Tunisia finished 3rd with four points from three games in Group D. They missed out on the last day of the group stage game when Australia beat Denmark 1-0 elsewhere.
Denmark – Christian Eriksen
Summer signing Eriksen has been eliminated from the World Cup after Denmark’s dreadful form forced them to finish 4th in Group D. The Danish side couldn’t get a win across three group-stage games. They lost to France and Australia and drew against Tunisia.
It was rather a devastating World Cup experience for Christian Eriksen and Denmark as they only managed one goal [vs France] in the group stage.
Which Manchester United player could also miss out on round of 16 qualification?
Facundo Pellistri could join the likes of Hannibal Mejbri and Christian Eriksen in crashing out of the World Cup in the group stage.
Uruguay are 4th with one point in Group H behind Portugal, Ghana and South Korea. Pellistri’s country could still qualify for the next round but that depends on their result against Ghana and South Korea’s against Portugal.
Uruguay can go through if they beat Ghana and Portugal don’t lose to South Korea on Friday as the Asian side has the same number of points as Pellistri’s side.
Ghana are playing really well and their main target would be to prevent Uruguay from getting all three points, hence the pressure is rather more on Uruguay.
Manchester United players in the round of 16
Man United have a good number of players in the round of 16 after brilliant group-stage performances from their respective countries.
Rashford scored twice to help England beat Wales 3-0, while Maguire and Shaw were brilliant at the back and can boast one assist each. The Three Lions will face Senegal in the round of 16 this weekend. Speaking of Rashy, the 25-year-old has scored three goals in the WC so far.
Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez has qualified for the next round after Argentina beat Poland 2-0 on Wednesday night.
Although Martinez was an unused substitute against Poland, the United centre-back started and kept a clean sheet as Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 last week. He also came on as a second half substitute against Saudi Arabia.
Martinez’s Argentina will face Australia in the round of 16 after finishing as the winners of Group C and Australia as the runners-up of Group D behind France.
The likes of Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot have qualified for the next round despite having a game left. Fernandes scored twice as Portugal beat Uruguay 2-0 last week.
Dalot was an unused substitute in Portugal’s games against Ghana and Uruguay but there are suggestions that he could feature against South Korea on Friday.
Casemiro, Antony, Fred and Alex Telles are through to the next round, although Brazil have a game left.
Man United new signing, Casemiro, scored the only goal late in the game to help Brazil beat Switzerland 1-0 to become one of the first countries to book their place in the next round.
The Dutch side booked their place in the next round and will face the USA in the round of 16 following their tight 2-1 win over Qatar.
The Netherlands finished as the winners of Group A, so they will face the runners-up of Group B, hence the USA.
Tyrell Malacia didn’t make a single appearance for Louis van Gaal’s side in the group stage.
Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane has qualified for the next round of the competition with France despite their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia on Wednesday evening.
Les Bleus finished as the winners of Group D and will face Australia, the runners-up of Group C, in the round of 16. Varane made two starts for France against Denmark and Tunisia.
The Manchester United players who didn’t go through to the next round are expected to return to Manchester and prepare for the return of club action later this month. The same goes to any United player that will crash out of the World Cup in the next stage.
