Pre-season: Predicted Manchester United starting lineup vs Atletico Madrid

Manchester United will take on Atletico Madrid on Saturday in Oslo and below is our predicted starting lineup against the La Liga outfits.

Man United have been decent in their ongoing pre-season, having won the likes of Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace 4-0, 4-1, and 3-1 respectively and drew 2-2 against resilient Aston Villa.

The Red Devils will look to bounce back to winning ways against Atletico Madrid and their chances of doing so have been boosted by the availabilities of Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Both new summer signings started on Wednesday during a behind-closed-doors friendly game against Wrexham and helped Manchester United to a comfortable 4-1 victory.

The pair could retain their starting spots against Atletico as Erik ten Hag plans to shape his regular starting lineup ahead of his first season as Man United boss.

Martinez started alongside Raphael Varane against the National League side but we doubt Ten Hag would use the same centre-back pairing today.

We feel the likes of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire would start at centre-back, while Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot would start at fullbacks. Martinez and Victor Lindelof could start at the back in the second half.

The midfield trio would be tricky but Bruno Fernandes is obviously starting. Because Ten Hag has played with a 4-2-3-1 formation so far, we expect him to start with Scott McTominay and Fred as a double pivot. Christian Eriksen would start from the bench to replace Fred or McTominay and that would give Ten Hag a chance to see if both Eriksen and Fernandes can start together and perform at their best.

We expect Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Jadon Sancho to lead Manchester United‘s attack, just as they have done so far.

Cristiano Ronaldo did not travel with his team-mates to Oslo and as a result, he would miss the game. He’s missed all five friendlies but confirmed he would be available on Sunday against Rayo Vallecano.
