Paul Scholes believes Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has to be benched against Everton on Sunday after his drab display against Omonia in the Europa League.
Man United needed a reaction from last weekend’s 6-3 defeat at Manchester City in the Premier League and they did just that at Omonia, although many fans expected more from United, given Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup.
Fernandes, who underperformed against Man City, failed to live up to expectations in Cyprus and was rightly replaced by Ten Hag in the second half.
After his substitution, Manchester United scored two more goals to edge the Cyprus side 3-2 away from home.
Paul Scholes has suggested that Ten Hag wouldn’t be making a mistake if he decided to drop the acting captain off his starting lineup against Everton on Sunday.
The former England international believes Casemiro needs help in the midfield, something he thinks either Fred or Scott McTominay can provide, hence suggesting that Christian Eriksen could play in Fernandes’ position.
Speaking after the game, Scholes told BT Sport: “It might be a time for Bruno Fernandes to have a rest on Sunday.
“Casemiro played in a three at Real Madrid all the time. He needs help. He will need Mctominay or Fred with him.”
Manchester United will look to build on the win tonight when they play visitors to Everton on Sunday in the Premier League.
Scholes isn’t convinced by tonight’s win despite three second half goals from Man United.
When asked if he has seen enough to take confidence into the Everton game, he replied: “No. Erik was right about the wingers being too static. Sancho needs a fast left back and centre forward to link with. Antony looks like a one trick pony.”
Casemiro and Fred had started only once for Manchester United this season but the latter played in an advanced role while Eriksen paired alongside the Brazilian.
Fans made a mockery of Fred’s performance as a no.10 after he was poor against Real Sociedad in September.
