Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names Man United penalty taker after Bruno Fernandes missed vs PSG

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Bruno Fernandes remains Man United’s first-choice penalty taker despite missing again vs PSG.

United got off to a winning start in the Champions League after beating the French giants 2-1 at Parc des Princes.

A penalty was awarded to Man United in the 22nd minute after Anthony Martial was brought down in the penalty area. Fernandes would take the responsibility from the penalty spot as usual but would be left in awe after Keylor Navas correctly read the Portuguese’ trick and saved his strike.

The penalty kick was cancelled and would be retaken after a VAR review showed that the ex-Real Madrid goalie went off the goal line before stopping Fernandes’ effort. The 26-year-old would convert from the retake to put the Reds in front.

Bruno Fernandes missed from the penalty spot last weekend vs Newcastle United, making it two misses in a row but Solskjaer is adamant that the ex-Sporting Lisbon midfielder remains his first-choice 12-yards taker.

“Bruno missed two penalties in a row but he’s not going to stop taking them – he showed focus and character,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer told BT Sport after the game.

The Norwegian boss would heap praise on Axel Tuanzebe after the Man United academy graduate, who featured last for the Reds in 2019, helped silenced PSG’s front line.

“When you go away to a team like this against Neymar and Mbappé you have to defend well and your keeper will have to make saves,” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added.

“Axel Tuanzebe is a top defender and his first game in 10 months was testament to the quality he has.”
