Newcastle United show interest in Scott McTominay but Manchester United are reluctant

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Scott McTominay in January but Manchester United are reluctant as they want to keep the midfielder.

McTominay’s playing time at Man United has reduced following the arrival of Casemiro from Real Madrid, whose performances have been excellent.

Although Erik ten Hag prefers Christian Eriksen and Casemiro as his double pivot, the Dutchman has promised the rest of his players that they will get their chances to impress him as there are loads of games ahead of them.

McTominay played 90 minutes as Manchester United beat Burnley 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup after the World Cup break but missed the Nottingham Forest and Wolves wins due to illness.

The Scotland international made his return to the squad this week but was an unused substitute as Manchester United thrashed Bournemouth 3-0 at the Theatre of Dreams.

Newcastle United are pushing for a place in the top four this season as they are currently in the 3rd position. They are keen on improving their squad this month and have identified McTominay as an ideal signing.

However, Daily Mail, who reported the Newcastle United interest in the Scot, also confirmed that the Red Devils have made it clear that they are poised on keeping McTominay at the club.

Manchester United wouldn’t allow their player to join direct top four rivals and improve their chances of challenging them for a place in the top four.

United are currently occupying the 4th position with 35 points after 17 matches, although they are level on points with Newcastle, who have played a game more.

The Red Devils will host Everton at Old Trafford on Friday in the FA Cup and Scott McTominay is in contention to feature, having failed to feature in United’s last three matches.
