Memphis Depay: Manchester United to sign Barcelona star on one condition

Manchester United are reportedly going to try to sign Barcelona forward Memphis Depay if he performs at a top level in the 2022 World Cup, according to reports.

Barca have reportedly marked Depay as surplus to requirements following the arrivals of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha over the summer and as a result, they are keen on letting him leave in January.

Manchester United, alongside Arsenal, Chelsea, Sevilla and Tottenham are all linked with a winter move for the former Lyon winger.

United could part ways with Cristiano Ronaldo in January after they reportedly agreed to terminate the Portuguese star’s contract for breaching his contract with the interview he made with Piers Morgan.

In the wake of that, the Red Devils are expected to sign his replacement in January and Depay has, once again, been linked with a return to Old Trafford.

According to Diario Sport, Manchester United will only think about resigning the former PSV forward if he performs at a high level in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Depay, 28, joined Man United in 2015 from PSV but left the club two years later after he failed to live up to the hype.

Cody Gakpo Memphis Depay Manchester United Barcelona

The Dutch international has improved since his departure from United in 2017. He scored 12 goals and provided 2 assists in 28 Le Liga games for Barcelona last season.

Cody Gakpo is another name that remains linked with a move to Manchester United. He was close to joining the Red Devils over the summer but the deal fell behind after United spent huge to bring Antony from Ajax.

With Ronaldo, who’s not allowed back in at Carrington, more likely to leave the club in January, Gakpo has a decent chance to seal his dream move to Manchester.

His performance in the World Cup will help reignite Erik ten Hag’s interest in him and speed up United’s interest in his services.

According to Graeme Bailey, it’s understood PSV will demand in excess of £40m from Cody Gakpo’s suitors.
