Manchester United Women thrashed Reading Women 4-0 at Leigh Sports Village to start their Women’s Super League campaign in style.
Despite parting ways with some of their first team players, Marc Skinner’s ladies managed to pull off a masterclass performance against Reading.
Four minutes into their opening league game of the season, new summer signing Maya Le Tissier opened the scoring with a beautiful effort. The defender wasted no time to get her season up and running.
Ten minutes later, Manchester United captain Katie Zelem doubled United’s lead with an unerring effort from the penalty spot.
The United skipper didn’t halt there. Midway through the first half, she provided Le Tissier yet another chance to mark her debut with a brace.
A beautiful move down the right flank saw Ona Batlle lunched in a superb cross into the area and Alessia Russo rose above everyone to head it into the back of the net.
Manchester United Women closed the first half with a resounding performance that yielded a 4-0 lead over Reading.
Shortly after the interval, Russo thought she had gotten her brace but her goal was ruled out because there was a foul in the build up.
The Red Devils had total control of the second half and came close on a few occasions to score more goals.
United’s massive 4-0 win over Reading will see them occupy the second position behind Arsenal, who won their opening game 4-0 over Brighton & Hove Women at home.
