Manchester United vs Newcastle: Eddie Howe rules ‘important’ star out of clash

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has provided his team news ahead of the clash against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

Newcastle will look to get their third league win on a bounce, having won their last two games 4-1 and 5-1 against Fulham and Brentford respectively.

However, it would be a difficult task for Newcastle to achieve at Old Trafford, given Manchester United’s recent form plus the Magpies will be without a number of key players.

United have won their last three matches after the Manchester City smashing and are eager to make it four wins from four in all competitions. It’s at the Theatre of Dreams, of course.

Speaking about how his squad is shaping, Howe told the Newcastle United’s official website: “Alex is making progress. He’s not available this for this game.

“It’s slow progress for Emil. It’s a serious injury. He is back in Sweden at the moment with his family in the early stages of his rehab. Knowing Emil, he will do his work and he will be very dedicated to that, but we’re very disappointed for him because he was an important part of our squad. We’re missing him.

“Jonjo (Shelvey) is getting closer. He has trained – not necessarily full training at this moment in time, but he’s very, very close and he’s doing very well.

“Matt’s picked up a calf problem. We don’t know whether he’ll be back for the World Cup break, but he’s doing well.”

The Newcastle United boss believes Manchester United players are gradually adapting to ‘very very good’ Erik ten Hag‘s philosophy but also admits the Red Devils possess loads of brilliant players.

Howe believes Newcastle will try to win the game but admits the Red Devils have been in good form of late.

“I think they’ve got outstanding individual players and a very, very good manager who I think will do a great job there,” Eddie Howe added.

“I think they’re now going to develop their philosophy and their style of play, and I think you can see that already emerging. They’ve given some very good displays and I think it’s promising signs for them as a team.

“From our side, I think we have to go into every game with no fear and believing that we can win, and the performance levels have been very high. We’re looking for the same again.”

Manchester United will look to get all three points to close the gap behind 3rd placed Tottenham with 20 points in the Premier League.

The Red Devils occupy the 5th position with 15 points after 8 matches and a win on Sunday will obviously take them to 4th but that depends on the result of Aston Villa vs Chelsea match.
