Louis van Gaal reveals why he wanted Sadio Mane at Manchester United

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has revealed the reason why he wanted Sadio Mane at Manchester United.

Man United appointed Van Gaal as David Moyes’ replacement in 2014 and the Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to sign Mane from Southampton at that time as part of his squad rebuild.

United dallied in their attempt to sign Mane from the Saints, and as a result, gave Liverpool the edge to get the deal over the line in 2016.

Since his move to Anfield, the Senegal international has won the whole lot including the Champions League and the Premier League and has been rated as one of the best forwards in the world in recent seasons.

The former Southampton forward moved to Bayern Munich during the last transfer window and years after Louis van Gaal‘s failed attempt to sign the 30-year-old, the Dutch manager has revealed why he needed him at Old Trafford during his time as United boss.

Sadio Mane is a true team player and this is the reason why I really wanted to sign him [at Manchester United],” said Van Gaal.

“These are difficult players to play against.”

Although Bayern Munich are struggling at the moment, Mane has scored four goals in 10 games for the Bundesliga side in all competitions.

Mane has also struggled at Bayern, and has failed to score in the Bavarians’ opening two Champions League games against Inter Milan and Barcelona.
