Lisandro Martinez: Wayne Rooney reveals what he likes about Man United defender

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed what he really likes about Lisandro Martinez, and predicted that he will become a big player at Old Trafford.

Man United lured Martinez away from Ajax over the summer after they reached an agreement that could rise to €65million with the Dutch club for his services.

The Argentine has been a revelation since joining the Red Devils in July and has massively improved United’s backline and has started all 14 Premier League matches this season so far.

Among other things, Martinez is known for his fierce playing style as well as the fight spirit he puts in every game he plays.

Rooney is really pleased with the 24-year-old’s performances for the Red Devils so far and only did he not rate his composure and playing style highly, he did predict the Argentina international will become a big player at the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking to the Times, the Manchester United legend said: “I really like Lisandro Martínez. Watching him for Manchester United recently, he is really composed and aggressive. He is perfect for international football and will be a big player for them.”

Rooney also predicted that Martinez’s team-mate Harry Maguire will perform well for England in the World Cup in Qatar, although agreed that the Englishman has struggled at Manchester United in recent seasons.

Maguire has missed a couple of games with injury issues and has seemingly lost his starting place under Erik ten Hag, who rates Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof ahead of the former Leicester City in the centre-back pecking order.

“I think Harry Maguire will have another big tournament. He has performed better for England than he has for United — I think he would agree — and over the last couple of years United have struggled,” Rooney added.

“He hasn’t had much protection and it is no coincidence that now there is more stability in the middle of the pitch with Casemiro, United’s defenders are playing better. With England, he has always had that protection.”

Manchester United are three points off the fourth position in the Premier League with a game in hand when they beat Fulham 2-1 last weekend.
