Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says Mason Greenwood has the quality to be in England’s World Cup squad because feared that he could be ‘hidden’ at Old Trafford due to competition of places.
The winger has signed a five-year deal with Manchester United and has the option to extend it by further 12 months.
The arrival of the prolific winger would obviously battle against the likes of Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Mason Greenwood, and Marcus Rashford for a place in United’s wings.
Jose Mourinho believes Mason Greenwood has the potential to be part of England’s World Cup squad but is concerned the youngster could be ‘hidden’ at United due to the competition in the squad.
‘The situation at Manchester United will be interesting from an England point of view,’ Mourinho told The Sun.
‘Jadon Sancho has gone to United, Marcus Rashford is also there and Mason Greenwood is a good example of a player who wasn’t in this squad but can be in Qatar, when he will be much more mature and has a good possibility of being selected.
‘Three young England players in one club, three with potential to play in the national team.
‘Which one will have an amazing season but which one could be hidden, not starting many matches because of the coach’s decision? Greenwood has the talent to be there.’
Mason Greenwood has earlier praised Manchester United’s decision to sign Jadon Sancho as he believes the arrival of the former Dortmund forward would help the Reds battle for trophies.
“He’s a fantastic player, we’ve got to push for more, we need to be winning the trophies – that’s our aim at the end of the season.
“While last season we missed out slightly but hopefully, next season would be a lot better.”
