Jamie Carragher believes the best way Manchester United defender can deal with Erling Haaland is to avoid the Manchester City striker.
Man City will host Man United at the Etihad on Sunday in what is expected to be the first Manchester derby in the Premier League this season.
City are in top form, but the same can be said of United, who have won five from their last six matches in all competitions.
The Red Devils have won against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal in the league with Lisandro Martinez at the back and Erik ten Hag’s side will look to do the same against Pep Guardiola’s Citizens.
Although it’s a Manchester derby, many people are expecting to see how Martinez would come up against Haaland, who has scored 11 goals in seven league games already.
The last time both faced against each other, the Argentina international silenced Haaland and helped Ajax to a comfortable 4-0 win.
Jamie Carragher, who initially said the 24-year-old would struggle in the Premier League as a centre-back due to his height, believes the Manchester United defender doesn’t have what it takes to silence Haaland this weekend.
Since Carragher suggested that Martinez wouldn’t thrive in the league as a centre-back due to his height, the former Ajax defender has gone on to win Manchester United’s Player of the Month award for August and put out a man of the match performance against Carragher’s old club, Liverpool.
The Argentina international has started all of United’s league games this season and is highly likely to start again this weekend.
Pep Guardiola was asked about the prospect of a Lisandro Martinez vs Erling Haaland challenge on Sunday at Etihad, he said: “I like when people underestimate players for size. He can tell them, ‘I’m here and a good player’. He’s a fantastic player, aggressive, good build-up. United paid this money, Erik knows him…
It’s not the first time he’s played against taller strikers, he handles it. Important is to be intelligent, brave. The crosses, Erling [Haaland] is taller, we see what happens…”
