Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has revealed what Lisandro Martinez brings to the team after he helped United to a big win over Liverpool.
Having started off their season with embarrassing defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, Man United needed a reaction in a bid to get on the same page as their fans.
United went against all odds and stage a much-needed 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night. Before the game, many wrote Manchester United off, given their performances against Brighton and Brentford, United but Jurgen Klopp’s side got more than what they had bargained.
Erik ten Hag dropped Harry Maguire to favour a Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez partnership at the back and the new centre-back pairing gave United a totally different spirit, something that hasn’t been seen in this current squad in a long time. And this tactical changes from Ten Hag played a role in handing Jurgen Klopp his first loss this term.
Raphael Varane believes that Martinez has a fighting spirit in him and he showed it effortlessly, excellently, regularly against Liverpool. In return, his performance didn’t only help United get the win but it also inspired Manchester United fans to vote him as their man of the match.
“Tonight we really needed a proud reaction in front of our fans. It was absolutely necessary. I hope it’s the real starting of the season (for us) because the two first games the mentality was not good enough. We had to fight like we fought tonight.
“Football, it’s about energy, it’s about when you have to push, when you have to stay calm, when you have to attack. Tonight we showed great control. It was a mature performance tonight.”
Raphael Varane has reunited with his former Real Madrid team-mate Casemiro at Old Trafford after Manchester United completed his signing this week.
Varane admits he feels excited to continue sharing the same dressing room as the Brazilian and reveals what the 30-year-old brings can bring to the Red Devils team.
On Casemiro joining him at Manchester United, Varane said: “Very excited. I know perfectly his quality. He can bring this balance on the team and his mentality. He’s a warrior, so I think he will really enjoy English football.”
Casemiro dumped Champions League champions Real Madrid to favour a move to a Manchester United side that finished 6th in the Premier League last season and missed out on Champions League football this season.
On why the defensive midfielder swapped Real for United, he continued: “I know exactly what he feels and why he’s coming here after what he lived in Madrid. He needs a new challenge, it’s a similar process that I had. I’m speaking with him a lot but he didn’t need me to make his choice.”
