Harry Maguire speaks out after pairing with Lisandro Martinez vs Brighton

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has admitted that he and Lisandro Martinez need more time to settle well at the back after their first pairing against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Man United boss Erik ten Hag started Martinez at the back alongside Maguire after Victor Lindelof was not included in the matchday squad while Raphael Varane was on the bench.

United conceded two easy goals in the first half, as described by Erik ten Hag after the final whistle and failed to turn the game around in the second half, hence their first game of the season ended in a 2-1 defeat at home.

Martinez wasn’t really bright in the first half and received a yellow card on the stroke of half time for a pull inside his own half.

However, in the second half, his performance improved and became decent at the back alongside Maguire but the Manchester United captain still believes both of them need more playing time to understand themselves better.

Speaking after the defeat, Maguire said: “Me and Licha [Martínez] have not played much together and were not on the same wavelength at times. I am sure we will get better and keep clean sheets.”
