Gareth Southgate has lauded Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire as England’s most dominant centre-back in the air.
Southgate also believes Maguire alongside Manchester City defender John Stones, are good on the ball.
The former Leicester City defender has lost his starting role to Lisandro Martinez, who only came to the club from Ajax last summer.
Maguire has started three times in eight games under Erik ten Hag and Manchester United lost all three games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford and Real Sociedad.
The five times he started on the bench, Manchester United won all five games and kept three clean sheets in the process.
Despite his lack of playing time at United, Southgate didn’t mind calling up Harry Maguire to his England squad.
His reputation could be on the line by maintaining faith in the Manchester United defender, but Gareth Southgate said he couldn’t care less.
“Whatever my reputation is, I’m putting it on the line. You always have to trust your judgment and we think he’s [Harry Maguire] an important player,” said Southgate when told his reputation could be on the line if he maintained faith in Maguire.
“He [Maguire] is our most dominant centre-back in the air. He and John [Stones] are amazing on the ball.”
The England manager called up Luke Shaw, who has also lost his starting role to Tyrell Malacia and both United defenders could be in action on Friday night when England play visitors to Italy in the UEFA Nations League.
