Erik ten Hag slams Man Utd stars over Cristiano Ronaldo treatment vs Aston Villa

Erik ten Hag has slammed Manchester United players for always trying to cross the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, regardless of the situation, during the Aston Villa clash.

Man United succumbed to their first defeat since the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City in October when they lost 3-1 at Villa Park on Sunday evening.

United lacked ideas and needed a deflected Luke Shaw’s strike to get a consolation goal against Unai Emery’s side on the stroke of half-time.

The Red Devils didn’t create enough chances today without talisman Bruno Fernandes due to suspension but Ten Hag has suggested that their desire to create chances by always crossing the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo whether he was in the right position or not was ‘stupid’.

Speaking after the defeat, Ten Hag told MUTV: “I think it was stupid to do that [often look for Cristiano Ronaldo in the air].

“We delivered too many quick crosses in from too far away. There was too much forcing and we didn’t have to. We have to find the crosses in the right moments.

“The right moment was when Christian Eriksen did so in the first half, and the moment was when he found Cristiano in the pocket at the far post. That was the right moment.”

Manchester United are now eleven points behind league leaders Arsenal in the Premier League after 13 matches.

Ten Hag is aware that his side will encounter some setbacks in their quest to bounce back to the top challenging for the top honours.

“It is a setback,” the Dutchman said after the loss. “This is a process and I know it will not only go up. Setbacks will come and we have to deal with that.”
