Erik ten Hag reveals how Cristiano Ronaldo reacted after Newcastle United substitution

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo was not happy to be hauled off during the Newcastle United game.

Ten Hag started with Jadon Sancho, Ronaldo and Antony across the front line but the trio failed to score after 71 minutes despite having some decent chances.

The Red Devils were in need of a goal at least and were running out of time, Ten Hag hauled off Ronaldo in the 71st minute for Marcus Rashford, who would go on to miss what could have been the match-winning goal in the injury-time. Many fans claimed the Portuguese star would have buried the chance Rashford lavished while some thought the 37-year-old had 71 minutes but didn’t do much.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was the only player Ten Hag hauled off in the game and the former Ajax boss has revealed that the Portuguese star’s performance wasn’t convincing.

“No players is happy to get off. I understand that. I have no problem. He [Cristiano Ronaldo] has to convince me he has to stay on,” Ten Hag said of Ronaldo’s reaction after being substituted.

Manchester United will host Tottenham at Old Trafford on Wednesday in the Premier League. The former Real Madrid and Juve forward is in contention to start against after Ten Hag confirmed that Anthony Martial will miss the game through an injury.

Anthony Martial is not available,” Ten Hag told MUTV.
