Erik ten Hag reveals 'difficult decisions' he made vs Liverpool, hails Lisandro Martínez

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that he found it difficult to drop both Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire against Liverpool.

Man United needed to put a stop to their dreadful start to the season tonight and they did it, although it wasn’t an easy game against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Ten Hag decided to drop Maguire and Ronaldo to the bench for Raphael Varane and Anthony Elanga respectively and his gambles paid off.

Varane was great at the back while Elanga did not only provide the assist to the first goal but gave Liverpool’s backline things to worry about.

Speaking after the final whistle, Ten Hag confirmed that both players remain in his plans and will feature in upcoming games.

Erik ten Hag told Sky Sports: “It was difficult [dropping Maguire & Cristiano Ronaldo], but I have decisions to make. I have a squad, and we have to use this squad. We play 50-60 games, so game to game we will see what team we have to pick.

Harry Maguire and Ronaldo are amazing players and they will play a role in the future as well, in the short future as well.”

Lisandro Martínez was brilliant against Liverpool and formed a formidable partnership alongside Varane.

Ten Hag was full of praise for the Argentine and told Sky Sports: “For a defender, his technical skills are quite good and his fighting spirit is there, and also his positioning and his battling – also aerially, he is not the tallest but he has good timing.”

Cristiano Ronaldo came on late in the game but didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
