Erik ten Hag has warned Pep Guardiola ahead of Saturday’s Manchester derby that Manchester United are just as good as his Manchester City side.
Although Man United succumbed to a disappointing 6-3 defeat to Man City in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium, there’s a chance the Red Devils could actually win the return leg.
When both sides met, Marcus Rashford was only coming back from an injury that kept him out of action for two matches, Anthony Martial only returned from a long-term injury and Casemiro was left on the bench.
A lot has changed at both Manchester clubs. Rashford has been scoring for fun, Martial keeps giving out consistent decent performances and Casemiro continues to give balance in the midfield.
As a result, the Red Devils have won their last nine home matches across all competitions and have won their last five games since club action restarted in December, yes, there has been a massive improvement at the club since the first Manchester derby.
Erik ten Hag claimed that his side is good enough to challenge Manchester City as he thinks there’s no difference between both teams if they are to be compared individually.
“It’s clear, he’s [Haaland] a really good player. But also, we have really good players,” said Ten Hag. “I’m convinced our players are good enough to compete with all the players from Man City.”
The comparison below just shows Erik ten Hag’s comments above are valid and that gives United the belief they can actually close in on Arsenal with a win over their noisy neighbours.
De Gea has been brilliant this season and there’s no doubt he’s a better shot-stopper than Ederson of Man City.
At the backline, the Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez pairing is obviously better than Laporte and Akanji. Luke Shaw is obviously a better left-back than Nathan Ake, who isn’t a natural left-back.
City gain advantage at right-back as it’s clear Joao Cancelo is clear of Aaron Wan-Bissaka going forward. In the midfield, Casemiro is level above Rodri, Christian Eriksen and Gundogan can be rated equally and Kevin de Bruyne is a class above Bruno Fernandes.
Going forward, Marcus Rashford is obviously clear of Jack Grealish or Phil Foden, thanks to his current form. Mahrez is obviously better than Antony currently and Haaland is level above Anthony Martial.
Like Ten Hag said on Friday, everyone will find out on Saturday if there’s a big gap between Manchester United and Manchester City.
