Erik ten Hag explains why Christian Eriksen started ahead of Fred vs Chelsea

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained why he started Christian Eriksen ahead of Fred against Chelsea.

Man United will play visitors to the Blues on Saturday evening in the Premier League and will be without one of their best performers, Fred, from the Tottenham match.

The Red Devils won Spurs 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday after a resounding performance from Manchester United. Thanks to goalscorers Fred and Bruno Fernandes.

Many fans thought Ten Hag would use the same starting lineup from the Spurs match, given the class the team showed, but the Dutchman dropped Fred for Eriksen, who came on in the injury time after he recovered from an illness, because of the Denmark international’s previous performances.

Eriksen was part of the team that won against Arsenal and Liverpool and missed the Newcastle United game due to illness and many would have expected him to be in the team if he was fit.

Explaining his decision, Ten Hag told MUTV: “The performance from Fred [against Tottenham] was magnificent, but also I cannot ignore the perfect performances over a long period from Christian Eriksen.”
