Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has explained that the reason he named an unchanged starting lineup from the Liverpool game against Southampton is down the performance he saw.
Ten Hag dropped Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo off his starting lineup against Liverpool on Monday and his gamble paid off with a top 2-1 win.
Although many fans thought the Dutchman would bring Cristiano Ronaldo back into the team, given the kind of team they are coming up against, Ten Hag would rather stick to the lineup that gave him his first win as Manchester United boss.
Speaking about his team, he told MUTV: “I think we have a squad that’s competitive so it’s always a difficult decision but we had a really good performance on Monday so you stick with it.
Erik ten Hag dropped Maguire because he wanted agility and mobility at the back while his decision to bench Ronaldo was because he needed energy and pace in the front line.
Manchester United will look to get their second win in a row against Southampton and Patrice Evra has already backed them to seal a comfortable win.
