Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo declined the chance to come on against Tottenham on Wednesday.
Ronaldo broke the internet when he stormed down the tunnel during Man United’s Premier League game against Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag had said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would come on as a substitute and make an impact but before the Dutchman would look at his bench, Manchester United were two goals up already after a resounding performance.
Despite United not really in search of more goals, Ten Hag decided to bring on Cristiano Ronaldo but the Portugal international refused to take part and headed down the tunnel.
Some Manchester United fans took to social media to slam Ten Hag’s decision for leaving Ronaldo on the bench after the 37-year-old had warmed up.
Several reports claimed that Erik ten Hag was keen on bringing the former Real Madrid forward on but it was Ronaldo who declined.
“There has to be consequences. It is important for the attitude and mentality of the group.”
It was the second time Ronaldo has left the pitch while a Manchester United game was still going on, with the first one coming in his first appearance under Erik ten Hag against Rayo Vallecano.
The Dutchman used that as a warning as Ronaldo wasn’t the only one who left before the final whistle.
“It will have a reflection for him, but also for everyone,” Ten Hag said. First time with Rayo [Valleycano] wasn’t acceptable, but he wasn’t only one.
“The second time has consequences. Football is a team sport and you have to respect standards”.
Ronaldo has been ordered to train alone for the next three days and will miss the Chelsea game as a result of Ten Hag’s punishment. The Portuguese star has also been fined two weeks of salary.
