Cristiano Ronaldo has explained why Erik ten Hag refused to bring him on during the Manchester United clash against Manchester City at the Etihad in the Premier League.
Man United were on a four-match winning run in the league when they faced Man City away from home in October.
Erik ten Hag maintained the same starting lineup that helped turn United’s poor start to the season around, which meant Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t in the lineup.
United got trounced 4-0 in the first-half by Manchester City. It was out there for all to see that Ten Hag needed to bring on his attacking players to at least pull some deficits back.
The Dutchman did just that but he snubbed Ronaldo to bring on Anthony Martial, who would go on to score two late goals in the game to reduce whatever embarrassment Manchester United players and fans were enduring at the Etihad.
After the game, Ten Hag revealed that he left Ronaldo on the bench due to the respect he has for the Portuguese star’s big career and didn’t want him to be part of the humiliation.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has claimed that Ten Hag was only trying to make excuses and accused him of playing his favourites.
On Ten Hag’s snub at the Etihad, he said: “Excuses, I see as excuses. I saw many things that, I don’t want to criticise him. He [Erik ten Hag] can have different opinion than me. They choose the players that they think is better for the team.
