Cody Gakpo explains how Louis Van Gaal advised him against Manchester United move

PSV forward Cody Gakpo has revealed how former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal advised him against moving to Old Trafford this summer.

Man United were interested in signing two forwards in the wake of Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to leave the Red Devils this summer for a Champions League.

United attempted to sign both Gakpo and Antony of Ajax this summer transfer market in a bid to catch up with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool but they couldn’t complete the deal for the former after they spent €95million on the latter, a transfer fee that could rise to €100million plus add-ons.

The winger confessed that he thought he would end up at Old Trafford this summer but after his dream move did not materialise, the 22-year-old has claimed that he is more than happy to stay put at PSV and revealed the advice he received from Van Gaal.

‘I spoke to other clubs, Premier League clubs which could be a good step, but there are more factors to consider, like the World Cup,’ Cody Gakpo said.

‘I spoke to the national team coach [Van Gaal] and asked for his advice. His advice was clear, that I should follow my feelings, but that a transfer in a World Cup year is such a transition, going from club to club. It’s not ideal for a player, and I agreed with him.

‘From my side, it was also a bit last minute because I was looking at [Manchester] United and then I have to choose a different club. It all felt like a bit of a rush. Plus, it wasn’t nice for PSV because it was so last minute.’
