Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has suggested why Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t come on against Tottenham, thanks to Marcus Rashford performance.
Erik ten Hag started with Jadon Sancho, Antony and Marcus Rashford upfront against Spurs as he wanted his attackers to make runs and press higher up the pitch.
The Dutchman also said Cristiano Ronaldo would come on in the second half and make a huge difference but that didn’t happen, hence why the Portuguese star stormed down the tunnel late in the game after Ten Hag had brought on Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen.
Marcus Rashford didn’t score but he was obviously a threat going forward. He made the fans believe he could score because he was finding himself in goalscoring chances, something Ten Hag wants from his forwards.
Erik ten Hag also thought Rashford could get a goal in the game, thanks to how the England international started the game but eventually he couldn’t score. Sancho and Antony were lively as well and it was going to be a huge decision to substitute one of the three for Ronaldo, with the score line 1-0 at the time.
Bruno Fernandes scored the second goal and the Dutchman felt there was no need bringing Cristiano Ronaldo on again.
Fernandes has suggested that the performances of Rashford, Sancho and Antony could be the reason Ten Hag didn’t bother calling upon Ronaldo.
“We had many good performances, against Newcastle we did a really good performance, controlled the game and did not get the result,” Fernandes told BBC. “Today overall it was was the best performance because we got the result and performance. We need more of this.
“We know the quality we have up front, we know we can be dangerous so if we have chances to shoot we have to have the belief we can score. Marcus Rashford didn’t score today but did so much, Jadon Sancho too and he was involved in Fred’s goal.”
